How to pick the right portable air conditioner

Portable air conditioners work by pulling warm air from the room, cooling it, and venting the hot exhaust out through a hose to a window. The most important number is BTU — too low and the unit will run continuously without ever cooling the room on a hot day. As a rough guide, a standard UK room needs about 340 BTU per square metre. Use our free BTU calculator before buying.

What a sensible budget gets you

Under £250: basic 7,000–9,000 BTU units — cools a single bedroom fine. £250–£400 is the sweet spot: 10,000–12,000 BTU units with Wi-Fi, heat pump modes, and quieter operation (58–62 dB). Above £400: large-room 14,000–16,000 BTU units that can cool 38–44m² open-plan spaces. All prices shift daily during heatwaves — the table below is live-tracked.

Amazon vs Currys vs AO — where to buy

Amazon usually has the fastest delivery (Prime next-day) and the widest range, but Currys and AO often price-match during peak season. We check all retailers multiple times per day so you see the true in-stock picture. Sold-out badges mean no UK retailer has that unit right now — set a restock alert and we'll email you the moment it returns.
