When the Met Office issues a heatwave warning, here's what happens — and it follows the same pattern every single summer:

• Day 1 of heatwave (30°C+ forecast): Budget units (£200-300) start disappearing. Amazon's "Only X left in stock" tags appear. By evening, the most popular 9,000 BTU units are gone.
• Day 3 of sustained heat: Mid-range units sell through. eBay becomes the primary source of stock as private sellers list units that sat in garages since last summer. Prices on eBay can actually be lower than Amazon at this point — sellers haven't yet realised the demand spike.
• Day 5-7: Only premium units (£450+) remain available. These are the units that were "too expensive" a week ago. They're now the only option. Buyers who hesitated on day 1 pay £200-300 more for effectively the same cooling.

Brand searches ("Meaco air conditioner," "DeLonghi Pinguino") are a distant third — suggesting most UK buyers are brand-agnostic and led by availability and price rather than loyalty.
