Portable AC vs Air Cooler — What's the Difference?
They look similar on Amazon, they both claim to “cool your room,” but a portable air conditioner and an air cooler are completely different machines. One actually refrigerates. The other is an expensive fan. Here's how to tell them apart.

Why air coolers fail in the UK
Evaporative cooling works by adding moisture to dry air — the water absorbs heat as it evaporates, cooling the air passing through. This works brilliantly in Arizona (10-20% humidity).In Manchester in July with 65-75% humidity, the air is already saturated. Water barely evaporates, so there's almost no cooling effect. You end up with a slightly damp, no-cooler room and an electricity bill for running a glorified desk fan.
How to spot a fake “AC” on Amazon
Amazon listings are deliberately confusing. Sellers use phrases like “portable air conditioner cooler fan” to catch both searches. Here's the dead giveaway:
- 🔍 Look for an exhaust hose in the product images. No hose = not an AC
- 💰 If it costs £40-80, it's an air cooler. Real portable ACs start around £200
- 📏 Check the technical specs for “compressor” or “refrigerant.” If it mentions “water tank capacity” instead — it's a cooler
- ⚡ Power draw under 100W = air cooler. Real ACs draw 700-1,600W
When an air cooler MIGHT work for you
If you live in an unusually dry part of the UK (East Anglia, parts of the South East during dry heatwaves), and you only need personal cooling (not room cooling), an air cooler at £40-60 is better than nothing. But for the same money, a tower fan or pedestal fan will move more air and work in any humidity. We recommend fans over air coolers for UK homes.
