Both appear in Amazon searches for “portable air conditioner.” Both move air. One of them is fundamentally incompatible with UK weather. The question is not which is better — it is whether an evaporative cooler can do the job at all in a climate that averages 65–75% relative humidity in summer. The running cost difference is real — over five years, a portable AC costs significantly more to operate. But the 5-year TCO calculation only holds if the evaporative cooler actually cools the room. If it does not — and in UK humidity, it mostly does not — the correct 5-year cost of the evaporative cooler is purchase price plus electricity for a device that failed its purpose.

Evaporative cooler problem 1: UK humidity defeats the physics

Evaporative cooling works by passing air over a wet pad. As water evaporates, it absorbs heat from the air, lowering its temperature.
