Portable Air Conditioner Without Window Access — Real Solutions
Casement windows, basement flats, rooms with no windows at all — you CAN still use a portable air conditioner. But you need to get creative with the exhaust. Here are the proven solutions that work in real UK homes.
Solution 1: Wall vent kit (most permanent, best result)
A 125mm (5-inch) hole through an external wall with a vent cover. This is how fixed AC units vent — and it works identically for portable units. Cost: £80-150 for the kit, £100-200 for professional installation.You'll need landlord permission if renting. Search Amazon: “portable air conditioner wall vent kit 125mm.” Permanent solution that looks clean and works year-round.
Solution 2: Casement window seal (for outward-opening windows)
Most UK homes have casement windows (open outward on hinges) rather than sliding sash. Standard window seal kits don't fit. You need a fabric casement window seal— a zip-up fabric panel that covers the open window with a hole for the exhaust hose. Search Amazon: “portable AC window seal casement” or “air conditioner window kit for tilt and turn windows.” £15-30. Works with any outward-opening window.
Solution 3: Vent through a door
If the room has a door to outside (balcony, patio, garden), vent the hose through a door seal. A door seal kitis essentially a longer version of a window seal — fabric panel with velcro that fits over the doorframe with a hole for the hose. Works well for patio doors and French doors. £15-25 on Amazon. Downside: you can't easily use the door while the AC is running.
Solution 4: Vent through a drop ceiling or loft hatch
If you have a drop ceiling (suspended ceiling) or loft access, you can vent the hot air upward into the ceiling void or loft space. The heat dissipates through the roof and doesn't re-enter the room. You'll need a ceiling vent plate and some flexible ducting. Not pretty, but functional. Only works if the ceiling void is ventilated (most UK lofts are).
Solution 5: Vent into another room (last resort)
If you absolutely cannot vent outside, venting into an unused adjacent room or hallway IS better than not venting at all. The AC will cool your room while the exhaust room gets warmer. This is inefficient and the AC will work harderas the exhaust room heats up, but it's the only option for windowless interior rooms. Open windows in the exhaust room when possible.
