Why the heating dries the air
Heating does not take water out of the air. It lowers the relative humidity, because warm air can hold more moisture than cold air. Winter air outside holds very little. Air at 5°C and 80% humidity, warmed to 20°C, falls to about 30%. That is why a bedroom can feel dry on a cold, clear night with the radiators on.
The other side: showers, cooking, drying washing and simply breathing put moisture back. In many UK homes, especially older or less ventilated ones, the problem in winter is condensation, not dry air. If your windows are wet most mornings or you see dark spots in corners, skip the humidifier. Read our dehumidifiers for damp homes guide instead.
Measure first: the hygrometer tip
- A digital thermometer-hygrometer is inexpensive and tells you whether you need a humidifier at all.
- Put it near the bed at head height, away from the window, radiator and (later) the humidifier itself.
- Read it for a few days, morning and evening. One reading on a cold night is not enough.
- Under 40% most of the time: a humidifier helps. 40–60%: you are fine. Over 60%: you need less moisture, not more.
- Cheap hygrometers can be a few percent out. Watch the trend, not the exact number.
Cool mist or warm mist?
| Type | Good | Watch out for | A night |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultrasonic (cool mist) | Quiet, cheap to run, no hot water. Most bedroom models. | White dust with hard water. Clean the tank often. | 5.9p |
| Evaporative (wick) | Hard to over-humidify; no white dust. | Fan noise; wick filters to replace. | 5.9p |
| Warm mist | Boils the water; no white dust. | Several times the power. Hot outlet: keep away from children and pets. | 49p |
8 hours at 24.5p/kWh (Oct 2026 price cap), assuming about 30W for cool mist and 250W for warm mist with the heater on. Your unit's rated power is on its listing.

What to look for in a bedroom humidifier
- Tank size against a night's running
- Makers quote run time on the lowest setting. To check a unit lasts the night on the setting you will use, divide the tank by the mist output: 3 litres at 300ml an hour is 10 hours. For a bedroom, 3–6 litres is usually enough for a night without refilling; bigger tanks are heavier to carry to the tap.
- An auto mode (humidistat)
- The most useful feature. Set it to 45–50% and the unit stops when the room gets there, so you do not wake to wet windows.
- Noise and light
- Decibel figures in listing titles are the maker's own, usually on the lowest setting. We have not measured them. A sleep mode that turns the display off can matter as much as the hum.
- Easy to clean
- A top-fill tank with a wide opening is easier to wipe out than a narrow bottle. Standing water grows bacteria and mould, so this is not optional.
Cleaning and limescale
- Empty the tank each morning, rinse it and let it dry. Do not top up old water.
- Once a week, descale the tank and base as the manual says, usually with white vinegar or citric acid, then rinse well.
- Much of England, especially the south and east, has hard water. In an ultrasonic unit that means white dust and faster scale. Filtered or distilled water, or the maker's demineralisation cartridge, cuts both.
- Replace filters or wicks when the manual says. A clogged wick just stops working.
Where to put it
On a flat, raised surface such as a chest of drawers, about a metre from the bed, with the mist pointed into the room rather than at a wall, curtains or electronics. Dry air can leave your nose, throat, lips and skin feeling dry, especially when you wake, and the right humidity can make a bedroom more comfortable. A humidifier is not a treatment for any condition. If you have asthma or another breathing condition, ask your GP or pharmacist first.

Humidifiers and dry bedrooms: common questions
- What humidity should a bedroom be in winter?
- Roughly 40–60% relative humidity. Below about 40% the air can feel dry on your skin, lips and throat. Above 60% for long spells, UK homes start to get condensation on cold windows and walls, and mould follows. Around 45–50% is a sensible target for a bedroom.
- Does central heating dry the air?
- Heating does not remove water, but it lowers relative humidity. Cold outdoor air holds little moisture. Air at 5°C and 80% humidity, warmed to 20°C indoors, drops to about 30%. Cooking, showers, drying washing and breathing add moisture back, which is why many UK homes are damp rather than dry. Measure before you buy.
- Is it OK to run a humidifier all night?
- Yes, if it has a humidistat (auto mode) set to around 45–50%, so it switches off when the room reaches the target. Without one, it keeps adding moisture all night and can push a small, closed bedroom into condensation by morning.
- Cool mist or warm mist for a bedroom?
- Cool mist (ultrasonic or evaporative) is cheaper to run and has no hot water, which matters with children or pets in the room. Warm mist boils the water, so it leaves no white dust from hard water, but it uses several times the electricity and the tank and outlet get hot.
- Can a humidifier cause damp or mould?
- Yes, if it pushes the room above about 60% for long periods. Signs are wet windows in the morning and dark spots in corners. If you already see those, the room needs a dehumidifier, not a humidifier.
- Why is there white dust around my humidifier?
- Ultrasonic humidifiers turn the minerals in hard tap water into a fine white dust that settles on furniture. Use filtered or distilled water, or a demineralisation cartridge if your model takes one. Warm-mist and evaporative types do not do this.
